Co-owner and President |
Matt attended Manchester High School in Manchester, MA and graduated in 1975. During this time, he worked at an independent fruit and produce retailer in Beverly, MA, where he developed his knowledge of the produce business. Matt graduated in 1978 from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston with a degree in Building Construction. Upon graduation, he worked for a short period of time in the construction field. During the early months of 1979, Matt contacted his previous employer in Beverly and developed a plan for the opening of a seasonal fruit, produce and flower stand in April of 1979. The original stand was located on South Street in Pittsfield, slightly north of the existing Pittsfield store. Matt had vacationed in the Berkshires with his family and felt very confident that the tourism in this area would be ideal for the retail business offered by Guidos. Within two years, Guidos became a year-round operation with Matt and his brother Chris working hand in hand. In 1983, they built their first store on the Pittsfield Lenox line and added the second store in Gt. Barrington in the spring of 1995. At the end of 1995, Guidos developed a wholesale fruit and produce division. In the summer of 1999, they built a new 10,000 square foot warehouse facility, located behind the Pittsfield store at 1010 South Street. |
